Moving Island is a collective of 5 artists from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina: Thomas Steyaert (dancer and choreographer), Elma Selman (psychologist and dancer), Irma Saje (costume and fashion designer), Vedad Orahovac (architect / set designer) and Asja Krsmanović (dramaturgist). The collective is formed in 2016 with the aim to do multimedia projects in local communities and try to raise awareness on the importance of social practices in art and possibilities to make positive changes in communities through artistic practice. With a common background in theatre, most of the work has a performative aspect, though some projects are more visual art based.
ABOUT THE WORK
The accent of our work lays on process, exchanging knowledge and experiences with groups whose members have fewer opportunities in society. A series of theatre workshops named “Whispering dreams” with juvenile delinquents aimed to give them tools to develop their imagination and to practice thrust between participants through physical expression. The process was shown to a wider community to create awareness and visibility. The project Zenica 2.0 in the Zenica orphanage was a multimedia project that resulted with an exhibition made of children’s proposals on how to improve their city through architectural changes and visual art.
We are targeting important subjects in specific communities and together with the group of people from that community we work on proposing different ways of seeing through art and artistic practice.
