International Theater Festival MESS was established in 1960 and it is the oldest international festival in the region. At the end of the siege in 1997 it was taken over by young theatre workers lead by Dino Mustafić and renewed with a high aim of organizing an international festival with most significant performances in the world. The festival, organised with special type of enthusiasm and devotion, got a completely new structure and attracted new generations to the theatre while at the same time retaining the old ones. The festival hosted some of the most prominent theatre directors in the history of theatre such as Peter Brook, Robert Wilson and Eugenio Barba while fostering its experimental element by discovering young talents with the potential to become global stars on the theatre scene in future years. MESS is funded by all government levels in Bosnia and Herzegovina and has had an ongoing support from the international cultural centres as well as embassies.
